Chan Master Zi of Sheng'yin at Linping in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "Knowing the Master has long kept the jewel hidden in his pouch, today in this arena please lend it briefly for us to see." The Master said, "Square and round have no inside or outside; let you dislike its ugliness or clumsiness as you please." [The monk] said, "The mind moon is solitary and round, its light containing the myriad forms." The Master said, "Do not take yellow leaves to be real gold." [The monk] asked, "Bodhi cannot be attained with the mind; from what did the Upādhyāya attain it?" The Master said, "Dirty scoundrel!" He then said, "If we discuss this matter, it is like the sun and moon gracing the heavens, shining everywhere throughout the eight directions; the blind do not see it, and those under an inverted basin do not know it—this is not because the sun and moon are not bright, but because of the person's own obstructions. If we rely on the ancestral teacher's authentic command, any hesitation creates a thousand errors. You must directly break through the golden lock and mystery barrier, freely exercising wondrous function in every direction. You have been standing long."
