11.41

蘇州崑山慧嚴海印法安禪師。僧問。柳垂堤畔花發林間如何顯道。師曰。兩彩一賽。云自從一見桃花後。直至如今更不疑。師曰汝向什麼處見靈雲。云花開滿樹花落枝空。師曰。放汝三十棒。

Chan Master Fa'an, [titled] Haiyin of Huiyan in Kunshan, Suzhou. A monk asked, "Willows droop by the embankment, flowers bloom amid the groves—how is the Way revealed?" The Master said, "Two colours in a single contest." [The monk] said, "'Ever since seeing the peach blossoms once, / right down to the present I doubt no more.'" The Master said, "In what place do you see Lingyun?" [The monk] said, "Flowers bloom full on the tree; flowers fall, leaving the branches bare." The Master said, "I release you from thirty blows of the stick."
