11.47

南康雲居契瓌禪師。僧問。路逢死蛇莫打殺。無底籃子盛將歸。未審師還受也無。師曰。爾甚麼處得來。曰恁麼則不虛施也。師曰。却且提取去。問如何是佛。師曰。讚歎不及。曰莫秖這箇便是麼。師曰。不令人讚歎。

Chan Master Qigui of Yunju in Nankang. A monk asked, "'Meeting a dead snake on the road, do not beat it to death; / carry it home in a bottomless basket.' I do not know, does the Master accept it or not?" The Master said, "Where did you get it?" [The monk] said, "Then it is not given in vain." The Master said, "Carry it away for now." [A monk] asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Praise cannot reach him." [The monk] said, "Could it just be this?" The Master said, "He does not cause people to praise him."
