杭州靈隱文勝慈濟禪師婺州劉氏子。僧問。古鑑未磨時如何。師曰。古鑑。曰磨後如何。師曰。古鑑。曰未審分不分。師曰。更照看。問如何是和尚家風。師曰。莫訝荒疎。曰忽遇客來作麼生。師曰。喫茶去。

Chan Master Wensheng Ciji of Lingyin in Hangzhou was a son of the Liu family of Wuzhou. A monk asked, "How was it before the ancient mirror was polished?" The Master said, "The ancient mirror." [The monk] said, "How is it after it is polished?" The Master said, "The ancient mirror." [The monk] said, "I do not know whether it discerns or not." The Master said, "Look into it again." [A monk] asked, "What is the upādhyāya's house style?" The Master said, "Do not be surprised at its desolation and neglect." [The monk] said, "What happens if a guest suddenly arrives?" The Master said, "Go drink tea."
