明州金鵝虛白禪師。僧問。如何是直截一路。師曰。鳥道羊腸。問如何是一體。師曰。駝驢猪狗。僧云。恁麼則四生六道去也。師曰。啞。

Chan Master Xubai of Jin'e in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "What is the direct shortcut of a road?" The Master said, "A bird's path, a sheep's intestine." He asked, "What is the single body?" The Master said, "Camels, donkeys, pigs, and dogs." The monk said, "If so, then it goes into the four forms of birth and six destinies." The Master said, "Mute!"
