Chan Master Zhiqi of Mount Yang in Yuanzhou initially studied under Chan Master Ti. Ti asked, "Where are you from?" He replied, "A person of Anzhou." Ti said, "Why then are you not at ease (an)?" He replied, "Today I see the source of the illness even more clearly." Ti said, "You are merely making a show of being clever." The Master thereupon bowed. He had a verse: "Having a mouth, one cannot speak; / Without a tongue, one can understand speech. / Being alert and clever is still a dream; / Where is there any Buddha or Patriarch?"
