11.7

明州天童澹交禪師。僧問。臨雲閣聳太白峯高。到這裏如何進步。師曰。但尋荒草際。莫問白雲深。曰未審如何話會。師曰。寒山逢拾得兩箇一時癡。曰向上宗乘又且如何舉唱。師曰。前言不及後語。上堂。也大奇也大差。十箇指頭八箇罅。由來多少分明。不用讚龜打瓦。便下座。

Chan Master Danjiao of Tiantong in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "The Lin'yun Pavilion rises high, and the peak of Mount Taibai is lofty. Reaching here, how does one take a step forward?" The Master said, "Just look along the edge of the wild grass; do not ask how deep the white clouds are." The monk said, "I do not understand how to comprehend this." The Master said, "Hanshan meets Shide: both foolish at the same time." The monk said, "And how does one expound the vehicle of the highest lineage?" The Master said, "The former words do not match the latter speech." Ascending the hall, [the Master said]: "Most marvelous, most mistaken! Ten fingers, eight gaps! From the beginning, how clear and distinct; no need to praise the tortoise and crack the tile." He then stepped down from the seat.
