11.8

建州崇梵餘禪師。僧問。臨濟喝少遇知音。德山棒難逢作者。和尚今日作麼生。師曰。山僧被爾一問。直得退身三步脊背汗流。曰作家宗師今日遭遇。師曰一語傷人千刀攪腹。僧以手畫一畫曰。爭奈這箇何。師曰。草賊大敗。問恁麼來底人師還接否。師曰。孤峯無宿客。曰不恁麼來底人師還接否。師曰。灘峻不留舡。曰恁麼不恁麼則且置。穿過髑髏一句作麼生。師曰。堪笑亦堪悲。上堂。直須向黑豆未生芽時搆取。良久召大眾曰。劍去久矣。

Chan Master Yu of Chongfan in Jianzhou. A monk asked, "Linji's shout rarely meets one who knows the tune; Deshan's stick seldom encounters an adept. What does the Upādhyāya do today?" The Master said, "Having received your question, this mountain monk is compelled to step back three paces, sweat streaming down his spine." The monk said, "An adept ancestral teacher is encountered today!" The Master said, "A single word harms a person like a thousand knives churning in the belly." The monk drew a line with his hand and said, "What can be done about this?" The Master said, "The grassroots bandit suffers a total defeat." [A monk] asked, "If someone comes just like this, does the Master still receive him or not?" The Master said, "On an isolated peak there are no overnight guests." [The monk] said, "If someone comes not like this, does the Master still receive him or not?" The Master said, "A steep rapid does not detain a boat." [The monk] said, "Setting aside 'like this' and 'not like this', what is the phrase that pierces through the skull?" The Master said, "Worthy of laughter, also worthy of grief." Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] "You must directly comprehend before the black bean has sprouted." After a long pause, he called out to the assembly and said, "The sword has long since gone."
