11.71

福州靈峯道誠禪師。僧問。祖祖相傳傳祖印。師今得法嗣何人。師曰。那箇古人恁麼道。僧云。秖如道吾有正法眼藏付囑迦葉。又作麼生。師曰。不妨具眼。僧云。千聖不傳方是的。一言合道未為真。師曰。早是不合也。

Chan Master Daocheng of Lingfeng in Fuzhou. A monk asked, "Patriarch to patriarch transmits the patriarch's seal; from whom did you obtain the Dharma to become their heir?" The Master said, "Which ancient said so?" The monk said, "Just as it is said, 'I have the treasury of the true Dharma eye, which I entrust to Kāśyapa'—how about that?" The Master said, "You are certainly not lacking eyes." The monk said, "Only that which the thousand sages do not transmit is exact; a single word according with the Way is not yet true." The Master said, "Already there is discord."
