12.19

瑞州瑞相子來禪師。上堂顧視眾曰。夫為宗匠隨處提綱。應機問答殺活臨時。心眼精明那容妖怪。若也棒頭取證喝下承當。埋沒宗風恥他先作。轉身一路不在遲疑。一息不來還同死漢。大眾。直饒到這田地。猶是句語埋藏。未有透脫一路。敢問諸人。作麼生是透脫一路。還有人道得麼。若無山僧不免與諸人說破。良久曰。玉離荊岫寒光動。劍出豐城紫氣橫。

Chan Master Ruixiang Zilai of Ruizhou ascended the hall, looked around at the assembly, and said: "As a lineage master, one upholds the guideline everywhere, answering according to capacity, killing and reviving in the moment. The mind's eye is pure and sharp—how could it tolerate monsters? If you attain verification at the tip of the stick and accept responsibility under the shout, you bury the lineage style and bring shame to the ancient masters. The single path of turning the body does not brook hesitation; if a single breath does not return, you are the same as a dead fellow. Assembly, even if you reach this territory, you are still buried by phrases, not yet possessing the single path of breakthrough. Dare I ask you all, what is the single path of breakthrough? Is there anyone who can speak of it? If not, this mountain monk cannot avoid disclosing it to you." After a long pause, he said, "When jade leaves the mountain of Jing, its cold light moves; / When the sword leaves Fengcheng, purple mist stretches across."
