Chan Master Yiduan of Chenghui in Luzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Kneaded from mud and adorned with gold." The monk said, "What is the Dharma?" The Master said, "Hard to proclaim even with an ocean-like mouth." The monk said, "What is the Saṅgha?" The Master said, "Shaving the head and washing the bowl." The monk said, "Is there anything beyond this?" The Master said, "There is no harm in being wide awake." He then said, "Spring mountains are green, spring waters are emerald; chasing the waves and following the currents is wasted in vain. If you can trace back to the original source, the myriad branching streams sound clear and distinct. I ask you all: do you recognize it? If you suddenly recognize it, you will be spared the effort of vainly wall-gazing as in that year."
