Chan Master Puman Ming of Shezhou. A monk asked, "When a Buddha appears in the world, each sits upon a flower. Why does the Master, now appearing in the world, instead ascend this seat?" The Master said, "A single red cloud rises; upon a thousand mountains the earth is strewn with gold." The monk held up his sitting mat and said, "Tell me, what is this?" The Master said, "No need for black silk or hemp thread." A monk asked, "Meeting face to face I do not ask about, but pray lend me a glimpse of the spiritual radiance behind your head." The Master said, "I will not lend it." The monk said, "Why will you not lend it?" The Master said, "A thief is a petty person." A monk asked, "Traveling far over rivers and mountains I do not ask about; what is the matter of the Patriarch's intention in coming from the West?" The Master said, "Ashamed, returning to the West, he bid farewell to Cīnasthāna; even today he still laughs at his descendants." The monk said, "If so, then the holy ones entering the womb offer no benefit or relief at all." The Master said, "Gazing at the wall for nine years was wasted effort; gaining the skin and gaining the marrow was utterly unwarranted." He then said, "How could our Patriarch's house style involve traveling the road? Losing the source and following illumination, the application of mind is coarse. A single word to report to those who know the tone: recently Southern Neng is no longer named Lu." Ascending the hall, he looked at the assembly and said, "Teeth and claws, a handful of bones; ears, two flaps of skin. From the beginning until now, Chan practitioners still do not know it. Noble ones, if you understand just like this, you are an arhat who transcends the dust, a heroic fellow! If not yet so: north of the river, south of the river, ask Old Wang. One fox doubt ended, another fox doubt comes." He ascended the hall again, looked around at the assembly, and said, "First the Buddha hand, second the donkey foot; each considers their own conditions of birth. The sun rises in the east and at night sets in the west; the brick is too thick, the tile is thin. Mistake, mistake! Former three-three and latter three-three; do not say Mañjuśrī faced Asuṅga."
