Chan Master Zhiyuan of Lingyan in Zhenzhou. A monk asked, "Amid mountains and beneath groves rather befits the house style of a person of the Way; beside the pavilion of clear water truly belongs to a patch-robed monk who has settled his affairs. This is still raising waves without wind, not treading in the surges. Please, Master, reply to my words." The Master said, "Clouds lie across distant peaks; rain drips from the hanging cliff." The monk said, "A few chimes of the clear stone chime lie outside right and wrong; a single idle person stands between heaven and earth." The Master said, "The stone man claps his hands; the wooden woman laughs heartily." The monk said, "Lying high in the empty hall without a single affair, let today and tomorrow be as they will." The Master said, "The four seas are tranquil and clear, the King's Way is prosperous; what need is there to be bitterly chatterful any further?" The monk asked, "Six times six is thirty-six; spring wind stirs the tall bamboo. Newly carved is a stringless zither; please, Master, play a tune." The Master said, "It falls not into the notes of gong, shang, jue, zhi, or yu." The monk said, "A single sound rings distinctly; ten fingers raise a fresh breeze." The Master said, "Unless it is evaluated by Zhonglang, it would still be like firewood in a rustic hut." The monk said, "If so, then regarding the matter of not hearing and yet hearing, the great assembly all hears it." The Master said, "Those who know the tune are few." He then said, "Look, look! The piled-up cloudy mountains join the myriad plants in verdant green; the misty islet lingers together with the lone boat in desolate stillness. Towers and terraces rise steep and high; halls and pagodas interlace their light. Phenomena after phenomena are unselfish; past and present are darkly penetrated. Right at such a time, do you still fully understand?" After a long pause he said, "Not bowing the head to deliberate, it is hard to obtain." He also said, "A mountain household's livelihood has few affairs; right here it is distinct—no need to guess. How could spreading the mat allow knowing and seeing? Let the birds and hares go and come again. Do all of you still understand? If you can understand it, the mind-monkey ceases leaping, and the nature-sea has no waves. White clouds and green peaks are naturally free and tranquil; purple paths and red dust follow conditions and open wide. If you have not yet understood the root source, by all means avoid seeking the profound and searching for the wondrous. Even if you search it out untrammeled and distinct, I dare guarantee that this person has not penetrated through." After a long pause he said, "Let the blue sea change as it will; I shall not communicate it to you." He also said, "The dew rolls up, clouds gather, the sun rises, and the moon sets. In the grove, secluded birds twitter and murmur; on the ridge, woodcutters' songs interweave. People of original nature in the east, south, west, and north!" He gave a shout and said, "Do not produce reckonings toward the outside!"
