Chan Master Hui of Baolin in Chuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "What Damei said." The monk asked, "Why do lamp and lamp continue one after another?" The Master said, "They stultify one another in turn." The monk asked, "How should one understand 'water emerging from a high plateau'?" The Master said, "From antiquity to the present, it flows without exhausting." The monk said, "The student has not yet understood." The Master said, "It cuts across the green mountains." The monk said, "From the ocean bottom red dust arises; on the mountaintop white waves swell." The Master said, "Drowned to death are you!" The monk asked, "Hearing shallowly and awakening deeply is an ordinary matter; when Bodhidharma met with bewilderment, what was his meaning?" The Master said, "Head bearing heaven, feet treading the earth." The monk asked, "If you suddenly meet someone in a three-family village, how do you respond?" The Master said, "When sorrowful, we mourn together; when joyful, we make merry together." The monk said, "If I had not come forward, how could I know it is like this?" The Master said, "You must not be careless." The monk asked, "How was it before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch?" The Master said, "A hot-water pitcher." The monk asked, "How was it after he saw him?" The Master said, "A water jug." The monk said, "The student has not yet understood." The Master said, "Worldly sentiments look to warmth and cold; human affairs chase the high and low." The monk asked, "How was it before the Upādhyāya saw Changlu?" The Master said, "Clouds arise on the ancient peak." The monk asked, "How was it after seeing him?" The Master said, "Water emerges from a high plateau." The monk asked, "How far apart are having seen and not having seen?" The Master said, "Flowing water ultimately reaches the sea; rising clouds must become heavy rain." The monk asked, "What about when one realizes equal and right awakening atop the mountain of knives and the forest of swords?" The Master said, "Cleaving the belly and scooping out the heart." The monk said, "Why is the Upādhyāya like this?" The Master said, "The mind does not fail others." He then said, "Step by step ascending higher is the patch-robed monk's mettle; thought after thought letting go is the realized scholar's oblivion. Mettle does not dwell in the position of patriarchs or buddhas; oblivion ever roams within the gates of compassion and wisdom. When there are thoughts, everything attains success; only when there is no-knowing is there great benefit." After a long pause he said, "Auspicious grass springs up in fine fortune; the forest prunus blossoms in early spring. Go investigate!" He also said, "Wisdom-water purifies the mind; the pearl of essence shines alone. The myriad phenomena are incandescent; the ten directions are brightly illumined. The eyes see the shadowless tree; the ears hear the stringless zither tune. If one is a patch-robed monk of genuine measure, he involuntarily bows his head with a cold smile. And tell me, what does he smile at? A holeless iron hammer."
