12.45

壽州壽春廣慧法岸禪師。僧問。為國開堂於此日。師將何法報君恩。師曰。香煙靄靄瑞氣飄飄。云恁麼則達磨舊時花葉而今信手拈來。師曰。寒山拊掌拾得呵呵。云學人今日小出大遇。師曰。乞兒見小利。乃曰。若論法體本絕言詮。應用無虧威光烜赫。英靈上士相共證明。後學初機徒勞佇思。雖然如是事無一向。山僧今日不惜眉毛與諸人說破。良久曰。人從陳州來。不得許州信。

Chan Master Fa'an of Guanghui in Shouchun, Shouzhou. A monk asked, "Opening the hall for the state on this day, with what Dharma will the Master repay the sovereign's kindness?" The Master said, "Incense smoke billows; auspicious aura drifts." The monk said, "If so, then Bodhidharma's former flowers and leaves are now picked up by your casual hand." The Master said, "Hanshan claps his hands; Shide laughs heartily." The monk said, "Today the student has made a small effort and met with great reward." The Master said, "A beggar sees small profit." He then said, "If we speak of the Dharma-body, it originally cuts off words and explanations. Its practical function is without deficiency; its majestic radiance is blazing. Spiritual superior persons mutually verify it together; beginners and late learners waste their efforts standing in contemplation. Although it is like this, affairs are not one-sided. Today this mountain monk will not spare his eyebrows to lay it bare for all of you." After a long pause he said, "A man comes from Chenzhou, but does not get news from Xuzhou."
