12.55

杭州南山法雨惟鎮禪師。僧問。如何是法雨境。師曰。竹寺門相並。湖山路接連。云如何是境中人。師曰。芳草和花種。脩篁帶雨移。遂顧視大眾曰。還知麼。南山嶺頭白雲冉冉。西湖岸上綠柳依依。一時驗取不用針錐。喝一喝下座。

Chan Master Weizhen of Fayu on the South Mountain in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Fayu?" The Master said, "The gates of the bamboo temple stand side by side; the paths of lake and mountain run continuously." The monk asked, "Who is the person within the realm?" The Master said, "Fragrant grasses are planted along with flowers; tall bamboos are transplanted with the rain." He then looked at the assembly and said, "Do you still know? Atop the ridge of the South Mountain, white clouds drift along; on the shore of the West Lake, green willows wave gently. Verify it all at once without using needle or awl!" He gave a shout and stepped down from the seat.
