12.56

潭州東明慧遷禪師初住南源。僧問。如何是南源境。師曰。五嶺侵霄漢。三株鎖碧煙。云如何是境中人。師曰。焚香開卷雲生砌。捲箔冥心月在池。乃曰。不可以智知不可以識識。大眾且道。識箇什麼。良久曰。露柱是木頭作稱。

Chan Master Huiqian of Dongming in Tanzhou first resided at Nanyuan. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Nanyuan?" The Master said, "The Five Ridges invade the skies; three trees lock in the emerald mist." The monk asked, "Who is the person within the realm?" The Master said, "Burning incense and opening scrolls, clouds arise on the stone steps; rolling up screens and quieting the mind, the moon is in the pool." He then said, "It cannot be known by wisdom, nor can it be recognized by consciousness. Assembly, tell me, what is recognized?" After a long pause he said, "The exposed pillar is made of wood as a steelyard beam."
