Chan Master Danxia Zichun of Dengzhou was a son of the Jia family of Jianzhou. Coming of age, he became a monk and attained thorough realization in the room of Furong. He ascended the hall and said: 'Within heaven and earth, throughout the universe, inside there is a treasure hidden in the mountain of form. Dharma Master Sengzhao spoke like this: he only knew how to point to traces and talk of tracks, but was incapable of holding it up and showing it to people. Today Danxia splits open the universe and smashes the mountain of form to hold it forth for you all! Those with eyes, discern it!' He struck the ground once with his staff and said: 'Do you still see? / Egrets standing in the snow are not of the same colour; / The bright moon and reed blossoms do not resemble one another.' He ascended the hall and cited Deshan addressing the assembly: 'In my school there are no words or phrases, and truly not a single dharma is given to people.' [Danxia said:] 'When Deshan spoke like this, he could be called one who only knew how to enter the weeds to seek people, unaware that his whole body was soaked in mud and water. Examining it carefully, he possessed only a single eye. If it were Danxia, it would not be so: / My school has words and phrases: / Golden scissors cannot cut them open. / In the deep and wondrous purport, / The jade maiden conceives a child at night.' He ascended the hall and said: / 'Towering at high noon, it is still half-deficient; / Silent at the third watch, it is not yet round. / The six gates have never known warmth; / Coming and going, it is always before the bright moon.' He ascended the hall and said: 'The precious moon sheds its radiance; the clear pool spreads its reflection. The water has no intent to dip the moon; the moon has no mind to divide its illumination. Only when water and moon are both forgotten can it be called severing. Therefore it is said: The matter of ascending to heaven must be cast away; the matter of hundred-percent perfection must be discarded; the golden sound struck on the ground requires no backward glance. If you can be like this, only then will you know how to walk among different species. Having come to this point, do you all understand?' After a long pause, he said: / 'Constantly walking without taking human steps, / Wearing fur and bearing horns, mingling in dust and mud.' A monk asked, 'How was it before Niutou saw the Fourth Patriarch?' The Master said, 'Golden chrysanthemums just opening, bees compete to gather.' The monk said, 'How was it after he saw him?' The Master said, 'Shoots withered, flowers fallen, completely without reliance.' In the spring of the yihai year of Xuanhe, he showed nirvana. His whole body was stupaed to the south of Mount Hong.
