Chan Master Zijue of Jingyin in the Eastern Capital was a son of the Wang family of Qingzhou. In his youth, he was recognized for his Confucian learning by Duke Sima Wen, yet his aspirations were lofty and he had no interest in worldly fame and office. One day he shaved his head and traveled with Furong; his practice was precise and his awakening surpassing. Appearing in the world, he resided at Dacheng. During the Chongning era, he was summoned by imperial decree to reside at Jingyin. He ascended the hall and said: 'The Patriarch's coming from the West was specifically to proclaim this matter. It is simply that you people are unwilling to understand it, racing outside in pursuit—plunging into the Red River to search for pearls, going to Mount Jing to seek jade. Little do you know that what enters through the gate is not the family treasure! Mistaking the shadow and losing one's head, is that not a great error? When the lineage gate raises its discourse, substance is tranquil and without reliance; diverse thoughts do not arise, and past and present are without interval. The array of myriad phenomena confronting the eyes is the house style. On the birds' path disappearing into empty space, there is no harm in taking steps. The golden rooster announces the dawn; the red phoenix soars. On the jade tree flowers bloom; withered branches bear fruit. Only beneath the gate of the Great Sun is it every day three autumns; before the Hall of the Bright Moon, it is at all times ninety days of summer. Do you wish to understand? / The shadowless tree hangs over the cold torrent's moon; / The ocean tide pours east, the Dipper shifts west.'
