12.69

瑞州洞山微禪師上堂。日暖風和柳眼青。氷消魚躍浪花生。當鋒妙得空王印。半夜崑崙戴雪行。僧問。如何是默默相應底事。師曰。瘂子喫苦瓜。

Chan Master Wei of Dongshan in Ruizhou ascended the hall [and said]: 'The sun is warm, the wind is gentle, and the willow buds are green; the ice thaws, fish leap, and wave blossoms spring forth. Facing the vanguard, one wondrously obtains the seal of the Emptiness King; at midnight, a Kunlun walks crowned with snow.'
A monk asked: 'What is the matter of silently responding in accord?'
The master said: 'A mute eating a bitter gourd.'
