Chan Master Xibu of Tianning in Xijing was a native of the Song clan in Caizhou. At first he resided at Shaoshan, and subsequently moved to Danxia at Tianning. He ascended the hall [and said]: 'Shaoshan recently has had no handle: hearing sound with the eyes, tasting flavor with the nose. Sometimes in one sleep lasting till daybreak, he is neither on the bed nor on the ground. Great assembly, tell me, where is he? If among you here someone can deliver a turning word, not only will it rescue Shaoshan, it will also ensure your itinerant pilgrimage is not in vain. If you cannot do so: where the three tiers of waves rise high, the fish transforms into a dragon, yet the foolish man still bails out the night pond's water.'
[A monk] asked: 'What is the ruler?'
The master said: 'In the universe there are not two suns; between heaven and earth there is only one person.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the minister?'
The master said: 'Virtue manifests the enlightened sovereign's transformation; the Way accords with the inclinations of worldly beings.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the minister turning toward the ruler?'
The master said: 'With an honest heart returning under Shun's sun, serving with wholehearted devotion beneath the sky of Yao.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the ruler looking upon the minister?'
The master said: 'Dark eyes gaze unblinking, the wondrous body inspects what approaches from the flanks.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the Way of ruler and minister in unison?'
The master said: 'The curtain and tallies separate the noble and the base; the concealed message passes back and forth without hindrance.'
On the fourth day of the ninth month in the fifth year of the Zhenghe era (1115), he suddenly summoned the monastic administrators and instructed them to divide his paper pouches into four portions—one each for the assembly of monks, the postulants, the permanent monastic estate, and the funeral expenses. Shortly afterward he further said: 'Danxia has a gong'an that from the past until now has been overturned and set back up; today I present it universally to all of you. Tell me, what is it?' Looking left and right, he said: 'Do you understand?'
[The assembly] said: 'We do not understand.'
The master said: 'Great indeed is the stalwart fellow who does not understand the final phrase!' Thereupon he took to his bed, lay on his right side, and passed away.
