福州普賢善秀禪師。僧問。如何是正中偏。師曰。龍吟初夜後虎嘯五更前。曰如何是偏中正。師曰。輕煙籠皓月薄霧銷寒巖。曰如何是正中來師曰。松瘁何曾老花開滿未萌。曰如何是兼中至。師曰。猿啼音莫辯鶴唳響難明。曰如何是兼中到。師曰。撥開雲外路脫去月明前。

Chan Master Shanxiu of Puxian in Fuzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the biased within the correct?'
The master said: 'A dragon howls after the first watch of the night; a tiger roars before the fifth watch.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the correct within the biased?'
The master said: 'Light smoke envelops the bright moon; thin mist dissolves on the chilly cliff.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the coming from within the correct?'
The master said: 'Though withered, how could the pine ever age? Flowers are in full bloom before budding.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is arriving within the mutually integrated?'
The master said: 'The cry of the ape cannot be distinguished; the call of the crane is difficult to discern.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is reaching within the mutually integrated?'
The master said: 'Parting the road beyond the clouds, casting off [all things] before the bright moon.'
