Grand Tutor Upāsaka Gao Shize, courtesy name Zhongyi, style name Wugong, initially studied with Furong, seeking instruction in the essentials of the mind. Furong instructed him to cast aside what he held dear and investigate by knocking at his own self. One day, he suddenly attained the subtle and secret. He presented a verse saying:
'Letting go on the precipice, I act freely in all directions;
The great earth and empty space are naturally level and plain.
Illuminating valleys and shining on cliffs, it borrows not the moon;
Above the hermitage, another screen hangs brightly.'
