12.78

襄州資福廣照素月禪師。僧問。如何是古佛心。師曰。不著中間去却兩頭。僧云。如何是和尚的的為人處。師曰。張公喫酒李公醉。問如何是佛。師曰。頂後無圓相。僧云。未審意旨如何。師曰。和風發嫩萼。問如何是真常道。師曰。著衣喫飯。僧云。學人不會。師曰。真常道。僧云。莫謾學人。師曰。想君不見朝官體。秖識皮鞋不識靴。

Chan Master Suyue Guangzhao of Zifu in Xiangzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the mind of the ancient Buddha?'
The master said: 'Not clinging to the middle, discard both ends.'
The monk said: 'What is the upādhyāya's exact way of guiding people?'
The master said: 'Master Zhang drinks the wine, and Master Li gets drunk.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the Buddha?'
The master said: 'Behind his head there is no halo.'
The monk said: 'I wonder, what is the meaning of this?'
The master said: 'A gentle breeze causes tender calyxes to open.'
[The monk] asked: 'What is the true and constant Way?'
The master said: 'Wearing clothes and eating food.'
The monk said: 'The student does not understand.'
The master said: 'The true and constant Way.'
The monk said: 'Do not deceive the student.'
The master said: 'I suppose you have not seen the dignity of court officials: you only recognize leather shoes, but do not know court boots.'
