Chan Master Lingshan Yanwen of Jinzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The master said, 'The gap-toothed barbarian monk smiles without speaking.' The monk said, 'This student does not understand.' The master said, 'With a single sandal, he returned to the Western Heavens.' He also asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'You have asked most intimately!' Then he said: 'The mountains are green, the water is green; / The wind blows the clouds of the southern ridge; / Dew drips on the chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge. / Further adding the heart of the pines and bamboos that withstands the cold of the year, / All are tunes upon a stringless lute! / The blue-eyed barbarian monk claps his hands insatiably, claps insatiably: / One, two, three, four, five, six!' 'Yi!' He clapped once and stepped down from the seat.
