Chan Master Shaoging of Xinghua in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "Without disturbing the waves, how should one advance?" The master said, "When it is fitting, you must lift the oar; do not wait for a headwind." The monk said, "This is still the waves of still water; if one suddenly encounters grasping clouds and seizing mists, what then?" The master said, "When the Way is exalted, the Son of Heaven's orders are not transmitted." The master then said, "Asking back and forth only increases redundant words; with respect to the Way, it is far, far off. Once the ancestral decree is put into effect, the essential ford is cut off; the Buddhas of the ten directions dissolve like tiles and melt like ice; the teachings and vehicles of the Tripiṭaka are swept away entirely like dirt. Reaching here, who dares gaze at it directly? Therefore, Śākya possessed the hinge and pivot to exhaust the world, yet still closed his room in Magadha; Vimalakīrti commanded eloquence that reached the limits of Heaven, yet still sealed his mouth in Vaiśālī. How much more so for those of inferior faculties and minor wisdom? Why is this? The trampling of dragons and elephants is not what donkeys can bear."
