13.48

汝州首山處珪禪師。僧問。如何是首山境。師曰。白雲片片時來往。汝水潺潺流向東。僧云。如何是境中人。師曰。寒山逢拾得拍手笑呵呵。僧云。向上宗乘事若何。師曰。虛空藏鳥跡。風過樹頭鳴。僧云。便是為人處也無。師曰。曹谿水急。

Chan Master Chugui of Shoushan in Ruzhou. A monk asked, "What is the environment of Shoushan?" The master said, "White clouds in patches come and go from time to time; the waters of the Ru babble and flow toward the east." The monk said, "Who is the person in the environment?" The master said, "Hanshan meets Shide; clapping their hands, they laugh ha-ha." The monk said, "What about the matter of the supreme school?" The master said, "Empty space hides the traces of birds; the wind passing through treetops resounds." The monk said, "Is that not where you help people?" The master said, "The waters of Caoxi are swift."
