Chan Master Changlu Jingzhao Chongxin of Zhenzhou was a native of Luzhou with the surname Gao. At thirteen he relied on the monk Yongcheng of Chengtian in his home prefecture as his master. At twenty he received full ordination. Traveling south, he arrived at the Dharma assembly of Chan Master Jingci Yuanzhao in Hangzhou, matched wits, and received the seal of approval. He first resided at Zisheng in Xiuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Way?" The master said, "The front gate of every household leads to Chang'an." The monk said, "What is the person on the Way?" The master said, "Where does the elder come from?" The monk said, "Is it not just this?" The master said, "The blue-eyed barbarian monk nods and smiles." The monk said, "Ultimately, how is it?" The master said, "Bow and withdraw." Ascending the hall, he said, "Bleak and chilly, the vast wilderness is desolate; dew drips on withered branches, mist enshrouds distant country houses. Looking as far as the eye can see under the endless sky, the myriad forms are clearly laid out; the frost moon sheds its radiance, reflecting everywhere in a thousand rivers. Preaching like this carries water and drags mud. If the guidelines were wielded strictly according to command, patriarchs and Buddhas would have to stand aside. Letting one move pass, there is another pure rule." He gave a shout.
