Chan Master Ruiguang Zhenjue Shoucong of Suzhou was a native of the prefecture with the surname Gu. He had his head shaved under Chan Master Yuanzhao, then questioned the lineage vehicle and gained the seal of approval. Thereupon he emerged in the world to propagate the Dharma. A monk asked, "'Thinking thus, the Buddhas of the ten directions appear.' Now that thinking is finished, where are the Buddhas?" The master said, "From where does a single phrase directly in the wind arise?" The monk said, "If so, then at every turn one bumps into Maitreya; at every step one treads upon Śākyamuni." The master said, "India and this land are not the same." He then said, "How could the wondrous directive of our lineage consist of talking much? Encompassing it in a single word, you must immediately rest. Clear-eyed patch-robed monks know it only themselves; the Golden-Hued Dhūta is skilled at distinguishing. Winter departs, spring arrives, summer is scorching hot. When meeting Hanshan and Shide, pass word to Fenggan not to babble."
