Chan Master Shuixi Shanke of Xuanzhou. A monk asked, "Are my hand and the Buddha's hand the same or different?" The master said, "Everyone has a share." The monk said, "Though there are a thousand skills, in the end there are not two styles." The master said, "Just do not mistakenly identify it." The monk asked, "When true gold must be smelted in the furnace and is completed with a single hammer blow, what then?" The master said, "Beware of talking about it." The monk shouted. The master said, "This lacquer bucket!" He then said, "I remember the final phrase at the Gṛdhrakūṭa assembly; today I present it to you all." After a long pause, he said, "Do you understand? Even if Mahākāśyapa stepped forward, today he too would have nowhere to state his case. Investigate!" He also said, "Thunder rumbles afar, widely spreading compassionate clouds; sweet dew just opens, and spring fills the whole sky. Willows open green eyes, flowers reveal fragrant faces; birds chirp in secluded groves, fish swim on the water's surface. To speak further of Bodhidharma's meeting in error is very much like gouging out flesh to make a wound. If one says the Dharma is originally like this, that is just naturalistic heresy. Speaking like this as if no one were around, clear-eyed patch-robed monks may scrutinize it as they please."
