Chan Master Shaoshan Gao of the Western Capital. A monk asked, "When the Patriarch's intent came from the West, what did he transmit?" The master held up his staff. The monk said, "If so, then there is Dharma outside the mind." The master said, "Let inside the mind and outside the mind be for now; what do you call Dharma?" The monk said, "A Tiantai staff." The master said, "That too is a second moon." He then said, "The seventh month, early autumn, is still hot—the season of all times, past and present. If deliberated within the Buddha Dharma, it is precisely outsmarting oneself; if taken as a discourse of nothing to do, how is it different from the non-Buddhists? Even if you avoid all of this entirely, I dare guarantee, elder brother, you have not penetrated. The words of the Tathāgatas and directives of the patriarchs drive a wedge again into a holeless iron hammer. When your own mind-ground is as tangled as hemp, you mistake the pointing finger for the moon instead. Do not ponder, cease explaining; stop gnawing on thousand-year-old dried bones. Let the rabbit run and the crow fly: when hungry, eat rice; when tired, rest."
