Chan Master Daofang of Zifu in Muzhou. A monk asked, 'Deshan and Linji used the stick and shout to receive people. When the upādhyāya appears in the world, what will he manifest to instruct?'
The master said, 'This mountain monk has no strength.'
[The monk] said, 'How could the upādhyāya lack skillful means?'
The master said, 'The great assembly laughs at you.'
A monk came forward, bowed, stood up, and said, 'Please, Master, answer my question.'
The master said, 'You have missed it.'
[The monk] said, 'Where was it missed?'
The master said, 'Five miles and then another five miles.'
He then said, 'The autumn wind is pure, the autumn waters green; / White dew stands upon the cold sand, / Autumn cicadas chirp in the secluded valley. / The golden wind fans the white water-cress, / Jade dew moistens the yellow chrysanthemums. / Flowing waters play the zither of Boya; / A cool breeze stirs the bamboos of Ziyou. / One can listen and never listen to the end; / One can view and never view enough. / Now, how do you understand the meaning of Buddha-nature?' After a long pause he said, 'Understanding emptiness, one cannot detach from sound and form; / One loves to hear the solitary gibbon wailing atop the ridge.'
