Chan Master Yuanming Zhuo of Mount Jiulü in Anzhou. A monk asked, 'In the teachings of the great canon, is there still an extraordinary matter, or not?'
The master said, 'There is.'
[The monk] said, 'What is it?'
The master said, 'Unrolling a scroll illumines a thousand realms; opening a case brings spring to ten thousand nations.'
[The monk] asked, 'An adept does not peck and tap; if there is pecking and tapping, one is not an adept. The student has come forward; I invite the master to meet me as an adept.'
The master said, 'The green snake in the sleeve roars.'
[The monk] said, 'The student does not understand.'
The master said, 'Cold light arises behind the head.'
[The monk] said, 'Wrong.'
The master said, 'What itch or pain do you feel?'
He then said, 'Mist settles on the rainy banks; yellow leaves drift in the air. Swallows depart and geese arrive—the seasons of past and present. Speaking of arising and speaking of ceasing is not yet the ultimate discourse; banishing existence and discarding emptiness—how could that be words outside the pattern? Midnight at Huangmei; nine years at Shaoshi. Directly revealing the true dynamic, there is no other principle. Therefore it is said: "Directly cutting through to the root source is what the Buddhas seal; picking leaves and seeking branches is what I cannot do." Dare I ask you all: How do you understand this principle of directly revealing the true dynamic?' After a long pause, he said, 'Investigate!'
