Chan Master Fayin Zaiyi of Langshan in Tongzhou. A monk asked, 'Where auspicious clouds burst open, a thousand towering peaks appear; when the feather fan is waved, the sweltering heat of the ninety days is dispelled. Just at this very moment, what is the phrase that arrives at the destination?'
The master said, 'A single rain universally moistens.'
The monk said, 'I wonder how to put this into practice?'
The master said, 'To shoot a tiger, one must match the critical moment.'
The monk said, 'Such a quick opportunity is rare to encounter.'
The master said, 'Do you want to take a blow of the stick?'
[The monk] asked, 'I know the master has long harbored the jewel in his pouch; today at this gathering, please lend it briefly for us to see.'
The master said, 'Could you be a true shipmaster from the southern barbarians?'
The monk said, 'Not only does this student rely on it; the great assembly also partakes of its grace.'
The master said, 'So you are merely an inferior Persian.'
He then looked around at the great assembly and said, 'Very well, very well! It can be called: the hidden and manifest brightly illumined, the principles of things open and penetrating. It serves as the jeweled seal of the myriad phenomena, and acts as the true lineage of the ten thousand forms. In its motion, it takes form; in its stillness, it is dark and quiet. Originally pure, not made brilliant [by polishing], it is naturally and fully accomplished. Therefore it is said: "How is it that the priceless jewel is hidden within the pit of the skandhas and āyatanas?" Great assembly! Today before the assembly, this mountain monk dares especially to bring it out.'
He then drew a circle, held it up, showed it to the great assembly, and said, 'Since here one lets oneself play foolish, it also requires everyone's refined appraisal. Do not say that the value of contiguous cities can match its radiance, or that a round gem an inch in diameter is fit to equal its beauty. Even saying the Nāga maiden contested the dynamic in the Vimalā world does not match true awakening. Even if one who walks alone with the golden wheel establishes merit, it is only provisionally a heavy reward. Tell me, what kind of jewel is it that is so extraordinary?'
After a long pause, he said: / 'The sea god knows its worth, but knows not its price; / It is left for the human world to illumine the night.'
