Chan Master Cishou Fazhou of Huilin in the Eastern Capital. Born to the Xu clan of Hangzhou, he left home and received full ordination, listening to and studying the sūtras and treatises. Later he visited the Dharma assembly of Chan Master Yuanzhao of Ruiguang, encountered the right dynamic, and was awakened. He first resided at Tianbo in the Northern Capital, next moved to Xiangshan, and later by imperial decree resided at Huilin in the Eastern Capital.
A monk asked, 'Mountain crags and water gorges are entirely the house style of former days; lifting the staff and the pure bottle is the newly arrived livelihood. The ancient hall is reopened; we wish to hear you raise the essentials.'
The master said, 'Strike the great Dharma drum; expound the great Dharma meaning.'
The monk said, 'If so, then Maitreya's gate opens, the heart clearly illumined; the peak of Deyun is lofty, where can the Way be hidden?'
The master said, 'Where do you see Maitreya?'
The monk said, 'Clouds disperse in the vast sky, and stars and constellations appear; the moon shines brightly on the sandy realms, and things are hard to conceal.'
The master said, 'Do not waste your effort.'
He then looked around at the great assembly and said, 'The imperial capital's Chan monastery, the bodhimaṇḍa of Huilin, is today temporarily lent to this mountain monk to ascend. I am truly ashamed of my lack of talent, presenting the guideline of the Buddhas and Patriarchs before clear-eyed people to flaunt my views and knowledge. Even if I could preach so that heaven rained the four flowers and the earth shook with the six vibrations, not a single bit of it could be put to use. That is because each person's majestic radiance shakes the earth, and no one lacks the slightest hair. Even though it is like this, there is still a higher aperture that the Buddhas of the three times cannot proclaim, and the six generations of Patriarchs cannot pick up. Tell me, what kind of thing is it that is so extraordinary? Do you grasp it yet?' After a long pause, he said, 'The road of Caoxi is level and smooth; do not forcefully grow brambles and thorns! You have been standing a long time.'
