Chan Master Neng of Shishuang in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "I know that you have long concealed the jewel in your bag; today in this arena, please lend it to me for a look." The Master said, "Both hands divide the village." The monk said, "Small giving, great encounter." The Master said, "Turn your gaze and look carefully." He then said, "Śākyamuni's secret seal does not go beyond the mind; Bodhidharma's true potential—how could it depart from the immediate reality? If you see into this here, you will be gratified for your whole life. If you still fall into confusion, you will bury yourself. Even though it is like this, what about the phrase that penetrates in seven directions and punctures in eight? When encountering a dead snake on the road, do not beat it to death; put it in a bottomless basket and carry it home."
