Chan Master Qiya of Xingguo in Anzhou. A monk asked, 'I ask the Master to answer without relying on speech or silence.' The Master struck once with his staff. The monk said, 'Upādhyāya, do not be hasty and hurried.' The Master said, 'In Western India, heads are cut off and arms are severed.' The monk bowed. The Master said, 'Fallen! Fallen!' Ascending the hall, he said, '"The mind is like the bright moon, tranquil along with the heavens."' He then drew a circle, saying, '"Master Hanshan, the nature is like a cold pond, thoroughly clear to the bottom." What kind of realm is this?' After a long pause, he said, 'The priceless nocturnal pearl—people do not recognize it. Even if they recognized it, what would it be fit for? For how many thousands of springs has one spent the nine heavens in vain?' Then, laughing heartily, he said, 'How can it compare to sitting alone beneath the bright window? / Falling and blooming, flowers have their own time.' He descended from the seat.
