Chan Master Ziqin of Mount Baogaishan in Tanzhou. A monk asked, 'Now that the Master has already sung the foreign tune, with what Dharma will you further instruct future followers?' The Master said, 'One character hanging down at both ends.' The monk said, 'Majestic radiance divides this night; from what gate do illumination and function emerge?' The Master said, 'Above the head, the bright light blazes; beneath the feet, pitch-black darkness.' The monk said, 'Entering the water, one sees the tall person.' The Master said, 'The bystander is ugly.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'Though streams and mountains differ, clouds and moon are the same. Adapting to the square and round, freely going west or east. Assembly! Phenomena are not separate from form; resonance is not separate from sound. Arriving here, forms and sounds are clearly manifest—how do you penetrate them? Is there anyone who penetrates them?' After a long pause, he said, 'The bell sounds and the drum echoes, answering one another; / The green mountain does not hinder the flight of the white clouds.'
