Chan Master Zhaoqing of Jianlong in Yangzhou was a native of Jinjiang in Quanzhou, surnamed Lin. He instructed the assembly, saying: 'Having just seen the new year, suddenly it is already the first day of the second month, and the weather is mild and harmonious. I intended to bring up a seasonal nidāna to discuss with you all, but Śakra Devendra and Brahmā King poked their heads out from the willow buds outside the gate and first spoke a verse, saying: / "Gently flutter the light catkins, / Floating along with the wind; / Next will run the balls of fluff— / Do not say that I am rambling." / Just then they ran into an Asura, who seized them and said: "Let your catkins ramble as they will; if suddenly blown by the west wind, 'The Wei River's fallen leaves fill Chang'an.' How do you say a phrase?" Thereupon Śakra shrank his head back into the willow bud.' After a long pause, he said: 'Investigate!'
