16.33

南康軍清隱潛菴清源禪師。豫章鄧氏子。上堂。寒風激水成氷。杲日照氷成水。氷水本自無情。各各應時而至。世間萬物皆然。不用強生擬議。上堂。先師初事栖賢諟泐潭澄歷二十年。宗門奇奧經論玄要莫不貫穿。及因雲峯指見慈明。則一字無用。遂設三關語以驗學者。而學者如葉公畫龍。龍現即怖。

Chan Master Qingyuan of Qingyin and Qian'an in Nankang Commandery was a native of Yuzhang, surnamed Deng. He ascended the hall: 'A cold wind strikes water into ice; the bright sun shines on ice into water. Ice and water are fundamentally without sentiment; each arrives according to its season. The myriad things of the world are all like this; there is no need to forcibly generate speculative deliberations.' He ascended the hall: 'My late teacher first served Qixian Zhi and Letan Cheng, spending twenty years; there was nothing of the Chan school's wondrous depths or the canonical scriptures and treatises' dark essentials that he did not master. Yet when, through the pointing of Yunfeng, he met Ciming, not a single word was of any use. He then established three barrier phrases to test students; but students were like Lord Ye drawing dragons: when the dragon appeared, they were terrified.'
