16.37

隆興府祐聖法𡨢禪師。潮陽鄭氏子。晚見黃龍深蒙印可。上堂。此事如醫家驗病方。且雜毒滿腹未易攻治。必瞑眩之藥而後可瘳。就令狥意投之適足狂惑增其沈痼。求其己病不亦左乎。法堂前草深於心無愧。

Chan Master Fayun of Yousheng in Longxing Prefecture was a son of the Zheng family of Chaoyang. In his later years he met Huanglong and received his profound seal of approval. Ascending the hall, he said, "This matter is like a physician testing a prescription for an illness. When mixed poisons fill the belly, it is not easy to attack and treat; only with medicine that induces dizziness and confusion can the cure be achieved. If one simply indulges preferences and dispenses what is wished, it will merely suffice to derange and confuse, worsening the chronic affliction. Seeking to cure one's illness in that way—is it not mistaken? The grass grows deep in front of the Dharma hall; my mind has no shame."
