Chan Master Zhiming Fohui of the Huayan Monastery at Yongxing in the Eastern Capital was a son of the Shi family of Changzhou. Ascending the hall, he said: "If we discuss this matter, in the heavens it arrays the ten thousand phenomena and manifests them together; on the earth it moves the four seasons and brings them forth; in humans it emerges and submerges, rolls up and unrolls, the six sense faculties functioning interchangeably. Tell me, on the tip of this mountain monk's staff, what is it like?" After a long pause, he tapped it once and said, "Applied high, it fits; applied low, it fits."
