Chan Master Zhihang of Yongtai in Zhen Prefecture ascended the hall and said: "Dispersing into qi is the dilution of the Way; adapting to mutations is the corruption of the Dharma. The wondrous mechanism is unobscured, spanning past and spanning present; when the great function appears before us, what gain or what loss is there? Even though it is like this, if you suddenly encounter an iron hammer without a hole, how will you understand it?" Holding up his staff, he said, "Pierced right through!" Ascending the hall, he said: "The dragon soars into the azure vault, changing without limit; the phoenix flutters in the blue sky, who knows its traces? When it is permissible to act, act—not departing from the hundred thousand samādhis; when it is permissible to stop, stop—would one forget the array of ten thousand forms? Therefore it is said: 'It cannot be grasped, it cannot be discarded; within the ungraspable, it is grasped just so.' Tell me, what is grasped?" After a long pause, he said, "Do not have delusive thoughts."
