Chan Master Jie of Shita in Yangzhou. After attaining the purport under Huilin, he resided at a monastery at West Lake in Hangzhou, and later resided at Shita in Yangzhou. Suddenly he stepped down from his seat and crossed the river. When Dongpo became the prefect of Yangzhou, he invited him again to serve as abbot; his letter contained the phrase, 'Stay a little while for the sake of Dongpo.' Academician Chao Wujiu promulgated it for him, and through this the master's reputation was celebrated throughout the era. Dongpo also composed an inscription on his monastic robe for him, which said: 'Shita attained samādhi, / Initially entering through precepts and concentration. / For this reason he constantly treasured and guarded it, / Ascending the platform to receive the precepts-robe. / I have heard that those who attain the Way / Must not keep a single thing. / Why then this Dharma robe, / Mended and stitched into a hundred patches? / All phenomena perish thought-moment by thought-moment; / This robe is not the robe of the past. / This Dharma has neither arising nor ceasing; / The robe likewise has nothing that perishes. / Shake out this dustless robe, / Wash this undefiled person. / If it perishes, let it follow its course; / Therefore, in the end it never perishes.' The master was recognized by Dongpo, which shows the kind of person he was.
