Chan Master Fazhao Tanchang of Guangfu in Changzhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master said, "When spring comes, flowers bloom by themselves." The monk said, "This student does not understand." The master said, "When autumn arrives, leaves wither first." He asked, "What is the white ox on the open ground?" The master said, "Head and horns are distinct." He asked, "What is the Upādhyāya's phrase for helping people?" The master said, "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven."
