Chan Master Qingman of Yuanfeng Monastery in Weizhou, surnamed Tian, was a native of Yanshan in Cangzhou. In his youth, he was known for filial piety. After his mother passed away, he left home, was tonsured, and received the precepts. He went to the congregation of Chan Master Yuan in Qingzhou, entering the room to consult and inquire. One day while walking in the mountains, as he took a leaf to wash his hands, he had a sudden penetrating awakening. He presented a verse on his realization: 'Most marvelous, most entrusted! / In active function, one is still deluded. / If you ask further, "How is it?" / Right across the mouth comes a punch.' For seven years he lived in the mountains practicing austerities and abstaining from grain. The prefect, Lord Qian, invited the Master to appear in the world. A monk asked, "The Chan barrier is newly opened, and the ancestral way is revived anew. We pray the Master present the instructional discourse on the wondrous mechanism of the thousand sages." The Master said, "In autumn, observe the yellow leaves falling." The monk said, "The wondrous mechanism of the thousand sages has received your instructional discourse; what is the meaning of our Master's barrier mechanism?" The Master said, "In winter, see the myriad trees wither." The monk said, "If so, then when the wooden horse neighs, flowers are strewn over the earth; where the mud ox walks, clouds over the sea congeal." The Master said, "You still must understand it before you get it." [A monk] asked, "What is the Patriarch's seal?" The Master said, "The earth is tranquil, the heavens are serene." The monk said, "What is the mind-seal?" The Master slapped his knee once. The monk said, "How far apart are the Buddha-Patriarch mind-seals?" The Master said, "The words are shallow; the principle is profound." [A monk] asked, "What is the place where a patch-robed monk finds strength?" The Master said, "The moon ascends into the blue sky." The monk said, "I do not know what verification there is." The Master said, "Do not doze off." He then placed the fly-whisk horizontally and said, "To knock upon the mysterious barrier, one must be a fellow with integrity, extremely high-spirited, who cuts through nails and shears through iron with crisp decisiveness before one gets it. If one is a mediocre fellow who cowers from knives and dodges arrows, one can only have a share in watching." He struck the Chan bed and got down from the seat. Again ascending the hall, he looked around at the assembly and said, "Have no differentiated thoughts; listen closely, listen closely! Yesterday was hot; today is cold. Rouse your spirits and look with effort! Look with effort! Looking back and forth, one becomes ever more muddled. If you want not to be muddled, look, look!"
