16.53

西京善勝真悟禪師上堂揚聲止響。不知聲是響根。弄影逃形。不知形為影本。以法問法。不知法本非法。以心傳心。不知心本無心。心本無心。知心如幻了法非法。知法如夢心法不實。莫謾追求。夢幻空花何勞把捉。到這裏三世諸佛一大藏教。祖師言句天下老和尚路布葛藤盡使不著。何故。太平本是將軍致。不許將軍見太平。

Chan Master Zhenwu of Shansheng in the Western Capital ascended the hall: "Raising one's voice to stop an echo—one does not know that voice is the root of the echo. Moving a shadow to escape one's form—one does not know that form is the basis of the shadow. Asking about Dharma by means of Dharma—one does not know that Dharma is originally non-Dharma. Transmitting mind by means of mind—one does not know that mind is originally without mind. When mind is originally without mind, one knows that mind is like an illusion; when one realizes that Dharma is non-Dharma, one knows that Dharma is like a dream. Mind and Dharma are not real; do not chase after them in vain. A dream, an illusion, flowers in the sky—why labor to grasp them? Arriving here, the Buddhas of the three periods, the entire canon of teachings, the sayings of the Patriarchs, and the trailing vines and entanglements of old upādhyāyas throughout the realm—none can be employed at all. Why? 'Universal peace was originally brought about by the general, / But the general is not permitted to see universal peace.'"
