16.54

青州定慧院法本禪師。僧問。古人到這裏為甚麼拱手歸降。師曰。理合如是。曰畢竟如何。師曰。夜眠日走。

Chan Master Faben of Dinghui Monastery in Qingzhou. A monk asked, "Why did the ancients cup their hands and surrender upon reaching here?" The Master said, "Principle dictates it should be so." [The monk] said, "What is it ultimately?" The Master said, "Sleeping by night, walking by day."
