17.12

太平州吉祥法宣禪師。僧問。如何是祖師西來意。師曰。久旱無甘雨。田中稻穗枯。曰意旨如何。師曰。今年米價貴。容易莫嫌麁。

Chan Master Faxuan of Jixiang in Taiping Prefecture. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master said, "A prolonged drought without sweet rain; / In the fields, the ears of rice are withered." The monk asked, "What is the meaning?" The master said, "This year rice is expensive; / Do not lightly disfavor coarse food."
