Chan Master Qi of Qingyuan in Jizhou was a son of the Chen family of Fuzhou. At twenty-eight, taking leave of his father and elder brother, he left home under Chan Master Zhi of Yunggai and served the head monk. One day, when the head monk finished holding the whisk, the master asked, 'I heard what the head monk said, but do not understand its meaning. I prostrate and beseech your compassion to instruct me.' The head monk earnestly guided him, telling him to investigate Asanga speaking this Dharma. After two days, he had an awakening and presented a verse: 'In speaking the Dharma, nothing is so intimate as this; / The ocean of lands in the ten directions is a single speck of dust. / If one can clarify the true reality in this, / When has a single person ever been seen upon the great earth?' The head monk was astonished, and based on this Zhi ordained him. He visited monasteries everywhere. Later he arrived at Shimen and was deeply recognized and approved. He went forth to reside at Qingyuan for barely twelve years. On the day he showed nirvāṇa, he spoke a verse to leave to the assembly: 'Last night at the third watch I crossed the swift rapids; / At the rapids the clouds and mist were pitch black. / A single staff as my intimate friend, / Smashed to pieces a thousand and myriad barriers.'
